Each time a major honors show nears, one notices an outcry for introducing additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing above others. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession within the realm of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.
Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything that year
- Another creative title missed out in 2019
- Popular arranging title got ignored recently
- Only a few logic titles scraped into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles globally continuing this trend for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge game development, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
